Standards

I was born and raised in the Upstate of South Carolina. As an elementary school kid, I remember thinking that my teachers slept at school. We never questioned their family life or life outside of school, unless they happened to be a member of our church or randomly were at the grocery store when we were there. I guess my innocent mind assumed a teacher was, well, just a teacher all the time. Teachers were held to high standards then, as well. There were no teachers with rainbow colored hair, tattoos or body piercings (at least not visible) when I was growing up. Principals didn’t hire candidates who were activist or didn’t look the part. Teachers taught the core curriculum of reading, writing, math, science and history. There was no gray area teaching or lost class time on social emotional learning. It is a shame that those standards have been lost, not only in the schools, but society in general has lost its standards, too. At some point the “anything goes” society will collapse.
